3 Ways to Reverse Insulin Resistance…and Why You Should Care

Do you ever have those weeks where you feel EXHAUSTED by the smallest things? Your normal routine becomes the hardest thing ever, you have a blah mood for days, and it feels like a cloud is over your head.

This was me last week. Hello, Luteal Phase of the cycle

The reality is that my blood sugar was going through peaks and valleys every day and I was trying my hardest to get off the roller coaster. I legit felt terrible. I had this realization though…

This is what people feel like every day if they are having these peaks and valleys in blood sugar. It has been a while for me since I lived in the roller coaster days so feeling it fresh again hit different.

I felt WRECKED. so tired. so depressed. so hungry. so puffy.

Does this sound like you??

the bad news: its likely your blood sugar and insulin resistance.

the good news: you can fix it.

Insulin resistance is essentially when your cells require more insulin to take in the glucose from your blood. This results in more insulin being produced by your pancreas and more glucose hanging around in the cells (high blood sugar). Now if you have Type 1 Diabetes, the pancreas isn't working but it DOES has the same effect on your cells. You need more insulin to get the job done.

This is what is leads to stubborn belly fat that won't go away despite how many miles you are running and kale you are eating.

What causes insulin resistance?

processed foods

stress

not enough sleep

inflammation

dehydration

…and more.

Mark Hyman, a leading doctor in functional nutrition, recently posted this:

First off…biggest cause of aging?!! NO,THANK YOU. However, for those of us who can't afford Botox this is great news…we can just increase insulin sensitivity. I'm kidding…maybe.

SECOND and MOST IMPORTANTLY

its the root cause of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia.

To put it simply, those are 4 of the top 10 leading causes of death in America. Heart disease and cancer being #1 and #2.

So now that I've freaked you out

HOW do you decrease insulin resistance and increase insulin sensitivity in the body?

Here are my top 3 suggestions (but there are way more)

  1. Strength training. Increased muscle=increased insulin sensitivity.

  2. 8-9 hours of sleep every. single. night. Sleep is SO essential to literally everything. Hormones, blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, stress, brain health, gut health…the list can go on forever. If you want to start somewhere, start here.

  3. Decrease processed foods. Sorry sister. The grease and seed oils aren't doing you any favors. I will never preach an all or nothing mindset, but with whatever is in your control, do your best to consume whole foods where you can pronounce ALL of the ingredients. If you do this, you will find the inflammation, fatigue, insulin resistance, puffiness, all start to go.

If all of this seems super overwhelming and its causing you to shut down, I get it.

This is why coaching is so transformative: all you have to do is show up. We eliminate the noise, decrease the overwhelm, and focus on what makes sense for you to do today that will increase your energy, make you feel good in your clothes, and think more clearly.

Overwhelm=shutting down. Focusing on 1 or 2 things a week with someone guiding you=movement and momentum.

3 months of adding 1-2 habits in each week and you won't even recognize yourself.
